Despite the fact that he is in the midst of his 15th year as a professional cyclist, “Fast” Freddie Rodriguez surprised the professional peloton when he sprinted his way to a fourth Stars and Stripes jersey. The Jelly Belly rider took the 2013 USA Cycling Professional Road Championships by a wheel length ahead of BMC’s Brent Bookwalter, marking a return to form that few would have predicted.
“It’s amazing,” Rodriguez said following his victory. “After my last team folded, I had been expecting to retire. I’ve always specialized in one day races…and it played out how I needed it to play out…a group sprint where I was in the right position.”
Earlier in the day Jade Wilcoxson brought home a skillfully played win on behalf of Optum Pro Cycling when she attacked breakaway companion Kristin McGrath (Exergy Twenty16) during the final kilometers of the women’s event.
